STEREO is the third mission in NASA's Solar Terrestrial Probes program (STP). This two-year mission will employ two nearly identical space-based observatories - one ahead of Earth in its orbit, the other trailing behind - to provide the first-ever stereoscopic measurements.
The primary goal of SECCHI a component of STEREO, is to advance the understanding of the 3D structure of the Suns corona, especially regarding the origin of coronal mass ejections (CMEs), their evolution in the interplanetary medium, and the dynamic coupling between CMEs and the Earth environment. On board SECCHI, there is an EUV imager (like EIT onboard SOHO) and also a set of coronagraphs, similar to LASCO onboard SOHO. Being able to observe simultaneously the same event from two different viewpoints will allow us to do real measurements instead of apparent (projected onto the plane of the sky). In favor of space weather forecasting, we will be able to better estimate the direction of propagation of a plasma cloud, with respect to the earth. |
