My scientific contributions are mostly related to the data analysis of solar observations from extreme ultraviolet telescopes such as EIT onboard the SoHO mission, and to the development of space solar instruments. I have also complementary expertise in advanced image processing. Since the early 90’s, I am a co-investigator (co-I) of EIT [R03]. I have actively contributed to its development in the USA, and thereafter to its calibration on synchrotron beam lines and in-flight [R17]. My current investigations address irradiance [R34, P52], Space Weather [R32], differential solar rotation, and small scale dynamics [C07, P36, S02]. I am a co-I of STEREO-SECCHI (launched in Oct. 2006) and an Associate Investigator of SDO-AIA (to be launched in late 2008). They represent the new generation of EUV imagers. I lead at ROB the “SIDC Data Exploitation” research project (Prodex, 11 people) whose vocation has become multi-mission. I carry out other data analysis projects, which have been accepted or will be submitted. I follow up the scientific literature that is relevant to my research topics and know well the related international community.

In 1998, I have initiated BOLD, a technological research program aiming at developing new detectors for UV observation in Astrophysics [R24]. A resulting ESA-GSTP project started in June 2006 with IMEC, Leuven. I have conceived and submitted the LYRA [R34] and SWAP [R35] instruments onboard the ESA-Proba2 mission to be launched in 2009. Since their outsets in 2002, I am the Principal Investigator (PI) of the former and a co-I of the latter. As PI, I lead the international LYRA consortium (B, CH, D, with contributions from Japan, Russia and the USA). LYRA is an innovative radiometer exploiting the BOLD technology and dedicated to measuring solar irradiance in UV passbands that are relevant to Solar Physics, Space Weather and Aeronomy.

Since the summer of 2006, I have taken the lead of the EUI consortium, a suite of UV telescopes and a capital payload element in the Solar Orbiter ESA mission. In addition to Belgian institutes, the EUI partnership includes IAS in France, MPS in Germany, MSSL in the UK, and SAO in the USA. As PI, I submitted the full ESA proposal in January 2008.

My scientific ambition is nourished by the pluri-disciplinarity of modern Astrophysics. I am sensitive to the societal applications of Research, which at SIDC translate into knowledge diffusion and services to the Public, to companies, governments, and other international organizations.
